Making the most of the landscape
Project Type
Design, implementation guidance
Location
Lake District, Cumbria
Style
Cottage, Productive
This beautifully converted Lakeland barn and out-buildings were originally surrounded by a gravel yard and pockets of grass. With a keen interest in health and well-being, the owners had a vision to create a perfect cottage garden, presenting the house beautifully and creating plenty of space for growing edible and medicinal plants. The challenge was to work out how to make the best use of the very long and narrow plot, and connect the house to the wider countryside.
The gardens now feature a beautiful entrance, with a gently winding walkway to a patio for dining in the evening sun, a large productive garden, lawns with secluded for taking a break with a good book, and a small garden for their guest accommodation. Locally sourced materials immediately anchor the design, with unique features such as the multi-layer fence which echoes the stone walls and buildings around. The relaxed planting is full of colour and interest, as well as beneficial properties, immersing you in the garden.
